Jimmy Greaves 1940-2021
Jimmy Greaves, one of England's greatest-ever goalscorers, passed away today. His record of 466 goals in 661 games will take some beating, and the former Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham and England forward was widely regarded as the deadliest finisher in the game.For those of us lucky to see him play, and later work with him in his colourful media career afterwards, Jimmy was a delight, never to be forgotten. Ken Jones, our former Chairman and Life Member who has passed away at the age of 87, went back many years with Norman Giller, who recalls:"It was just a few weeks ago that I last saw my old mate Ken Jones and his lovely wife, Kathy. We were at the memorial service for Hugh McIlvanney at St Bride’s in Fleet Street, and we made a pact. I told him: “I won’t come to your funeral, Ken, unless you come to mine. Ok?” I shook his left hand as he laughingly agreed.

Steve Curry – more tributes
Tributes have been flowing for Steve Curry, our friend, colleague and former FWA Chairman, who has passed away after a short illness at the age of 76:Norman Giller, his former Express colleague and friend, tweeted: “Reeling from news of Steve Curry’s passing. We were close colleagues at the Express. One of the best contacts men in the football reporting business and a great raconteur. We were together recently and I jokingly mocked him for being overweight. A good man.”

I tunnelled my way out of the Daily Express while chief football reporter in December 1973 to follow a career as a TV scriptwriter and author (pretentious, moi?), but always kept my hand in as a freelance journalist.
