When Eastleigh owner-chairman Stewart Donald quit the club to take over Sunderland in the summer Spitfires supporters could have been forgiven for fearing the future. The insurance tycoon had bankrolled their push to make the Football League, transforming the Silverlake Stadium in the process. However, ownership rules meant he would have to wind up his investment in the Vanarama National League club and non-League history is full of meteors who crashed to earth after a benefactor departed.

Jamie Vardy voted FWA Footballer of the Year 2016
Leicester forward Jamie Vardy is the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year 2016.

The England international collected 36% of members’ votes, making him a clear winner ahead of Foxes' team-mates Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante.

The 29-year-old has scored 24 goals for club and country so far this season, which have helped to put Leicester on the verge of winning the Barclays Premier League title.

IT HAD been an enjoyable summer for Matt Lawton, the Daily Mail’s chief football correspondent. Despite England doing what they usually do at major tournaments and losing on penalties in the quarter-finals, Euro 2012 was the best finals for many years, full of excellent football and outstanding individuals while Poland and Ukraine proved not to be the war zones predicted in some – well one – quarter.

I worked on the Informer group of free newspapers in Surrey/Middlesex area. Started off doing match reports for nowt for them on Kingstonian in the Isthmian League. Wouldn' t recommend working for nothing though.

FWA launch Beat the Writers predictions app

 The Football Writers’ Association is celebrating the start of the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League season by launching a new football predictions iPhone app called Beat the Writers.

The game can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and gives football fans the chance to pit their predicting skills against nine of Britain’s top football writers, including Andy Dunn of the Sunday Mirror, Steve Bates of The People and Patrick Barclay of the London Evening Standard.

For most of the supporters the focus is on this Sunday’s FA Cup fifth round tie at Liverpool, but for Gus Poyet and the Brighton & Hove Albion players the Tuesday night visit of Millwall to the Amex is the top priority (at least until 9.45pm on Tuesday). It’s an early start to the week at the Amex and after writing Gus’s notes with him for Tuesday’s match programme, it’s off to the regular pre-match ...
