Student Football Writer Award winners honoured

We at the FWA were delighted to present our inaugural Student Football Writer award winners Ella Graunia Cook and Jacob Tanswell with their prizes in person this week.

FWA Chair Carrie Brown hosted a lunch at the Soho Townhouse on Tuesday Oct 6 at which Ella and Jacob were presented with their trophies, respectively the Vikki Orvice award and the Hugh McIlvanney award, named in honour of two of our most prominent late members.

Ruben Dias – the Footballer of the Year 2021

The Football Writers’ Association is delighted to announce that Ruben Dias has been voted Footballer of the Year 2021, the first defender to win the award since Steve Nicol in 1989.


The Manchester City centre-back was a comfortable winner ahead of Tottenham’s Harry Kane and City team-mate, Kevin De Bruyne. Overall nine City players received votes which accounted for over 50 per cent of the total votes cast.

Marcus Rashford receives FWA Tribute Award

Marcus Rashford says he is honoured to become the latest Manchester United player to receive the FWA Tribute Award.

The United and England striker was honoured today for his outstanding work on and off the pitch, and says in an exclusive interview with FWA Chair Carrie Brown that he is honoured to follow in the footsteps of United legends Sir Alex Ferguson, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham in receiving our tribute award.

Memories of Vikki Orvice

A star-studded gathering of the good and the great from sport and the media gathered at Lord's on November 13 to honour the legacy of Vikki Orvice and raise a six figure sum for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Over £103,000 was raised among an audience of 400 people who turned up to pay tribute to Vikki, who passed away last February. It was an emotional and moving evening, with tears and laughter in equal measure, superbly hosted by Jacqui Oatley, Vikki's friend and FWA committee member.

Vikki Orvice fundraising dinner

A gift to you from our birthday girl.


The FWA’s first female vice-chair, Vikki Orvice, should have celebrated her 57th birthday on Friday. 



Sadly we can’t mark the occasion with Vikki this year as she passed away in February. Instead we will celebrate her life with a fundraising dinner on Wednesday (13th) for the The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
